What AJ said (ctrl-a, ctrl-c) is what I do. And not just with emails, but also when posting on a message board or a forum or here at Y! Answers. Or I just email the message to myself if I'm not finished with it and I want to continue working on it.

Right click in the text box and hit select all, then hit ctrl+c before you go to send it. Or right click again and click copy. If it gets erased it's saved on your end, so when you go to try and send it again, press ctrl+v or right click in the text box and hit paste. But don't copy anything after you copy your message, or it will be replaced! Other than that there is nothing.
